Do you know what a blessing is? The English word ‘blessing’ is akin to the word ‘benediction,’ derived from the Latin bene (well) + dicere (to speak). In other words, a blessing is to speak well of someone or something that one encounters. But to speak well one must first notice the someone or something and be truly aware of the treasure it is.
This is the season to share blessings with one another and to celebrate the greatest blessing of all, Jesus, our Lord. But in order to share blessings (to become aware and to speak well) we must create a space in our hearts to perceive and receive the gifts that we encounter this Christmas. Constant hustle and bustle does not lend itself very well to offering blessings.
My prayer for all of us this Christmas is that we may relax enough before God so that we may be aware of the many gifts that God provides through our lives, our families and friends, our homes, our Church and our beautiful world. But, most of all, we must be mindful of the God who came to us in Jesus that first Christmas and who continues to come to those who look for him. He comes through all of us.
Thank you for choosing to share the gift of Christ’s continued presence in our midst this Christmas. Some of you may be visiting and I am happy that you are here. May everyone’s Christmas be filled with the joy and the peace proper to this season as you wonder and pray and ponder. I will remember you and your loved ones at the altar at each Mass. Merry Christmas!
