Sodalists are called to be the presence of the Blessed Mother in our parish community and the wider world. The Sanctuary Sodality is open to all women members of the parish and also to women at parishes that do not have sodalities. Women in the process of being received into the Catholic Church are welcome to join. We are married or single, parents or not, employed, retired, or working at home! Current information on Sanctuary Sodality officers together with contact information is below and also can be obtained by calling the parish office. Please contact us at
Sodalists are organized into Units named for attributes of Mary that correspond to our stage of life because we look to share life's joys and sorrows with one another over time. Units meet regularly for fellowship and prayer and are active in a charitable endeavor chosen by the Unit. Heads of Unit and Executive Officers meet monthly. We host a Sodality-wide dinner each fall and spring. Our primary parish responsibilities are for weekly altar duty that individual Sodalists perform once or twice each year and for the annual Bazaar that raises money for both the parish and each Unit's chosen charities. We also serve as Honor Guard at the funeral masses of departed Sodalists.
Sodalists support and participate in a wide range of local organizations, including Catholic Charities, Martha's Table, So Others Might Eat, The Christ Child Society, Washington Middle School for Girls, Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School, DC Diaper Bank, and Literacy Volunteers of America. Sodalists often engage in direct service activities as a Unit -- gathering clothing for prisoners completing sentences, putting sack lunches together for Cup of Joe, bringing sacraments to shut-ins. The scope of activities is chosen by and tailored to the capacities of the Unit members.
Prospective members are encouraged to explore joining existing units but it is always possible for groups to form new units. Please contact the Membership Chair for additional information.
Officers of the Executive Board are selected from any Unit and serve for a term of two years, starting in the fall of every other year.
